Business Analyst Career Paths
There are different types of business analysts in the industry. Functional BAs, Technical BAs and Techno-Functional BAs. Functional BA has the domain knowledge and Technical BA has the system knowledge. Techno -Functional BA has both domain and technical knowledge.
Functional BAs are responsible for business requirements and documenting them in BRD (Business Requirement Document). They focus more on the scope of the work and quality aspects needed to address the business need or requirements. They are usually called as Functional Consultants. They ensure that each process in a business is addressed by the system. They also perform the user acceptance testing and ensure that the solution works as expected. People with sound domain or business process knowledge can play this role better. Functional BAs can move further as Lead /Senior Business Analyst or Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
Technical BAs are responsible for TSD (Technical Specification Document) and they have a sound system knowledge and interfaces around the solution components. Developers or Tech Leads can play this role better as it requires technical knowledge for building the suitable solution. They are normally called as System Analysts. Technical BAs can move further as Project Leads/ Product Manager or System / Solution Architect.
Techno-functional consultants are rare combination of competency and this role can help to build innovative solutions for business. A technical person or developer acquires the domain knowledge and can become a techno-functional BA.
